Colin Arnell
2004 Veteran of the Year
|
Colin Arnell has been secretary of the
Gympie Cooloola Veterans Tennis Association Inc. for
five years and is better known by some in the Gympie
area as Mr. Tennis. He lives for tennis and the club and
everything he does has something to do with getting more
players on the tennis court through the week and on
weekends.
In 2004 he was awarded Gympie Sports Administrator of
the Year by the Gympie Sportsman’s Association. |
Colin organizes social tennis every Monday and Thursday
evenings for all grades of players, Saturday afternoon
fixtures, arranges for the preparation of granite courts for
local fixtures, Sunshine Coast Veterans Fixtures on Sundays
and other times throughout the year.
He plays tennis himself three to four times a week and some
Veterans tournaments throughout the year.
He organizes the Cooloola Milk Cup every year, which is a
team challenge, made up of three teams of eight veteran tennis
players from different towns.
When Veterans fixture teams are short, people ring Colin
and he goes to great lengths to ensure that he can find
players as he hates to see any team forfeit.
Colin also prepares the newsletter for the club and hand
delivers most of them in his own time.
Colin’s outstanding contribution to the club is his
organization abilities. He collects the clubs mail from the
post box two to three times a week and then sorts out which
committee member is responsible and passes it on for
attention. He mows the lawns, looks after the plants and
gardens around the clubhouse and waters the plants twice a
week. He keeps the President up to date with what’s going on
in the tennis world. He also orders all tennis balls, tennis
nets, stationery, raffle tickets, raffle prizes and entry
forms for the year for different tournaments.
Colin’s contribution to the Gympie Cooloola Veterans
Tennis Association Inc has been invaluable and his efforts
ensure the continued growth of Veterans tennis in the area.
