Ward Hillier - Player of the Year for 2009

 

Harward (Ward) Armstrong Hillier was honoured (posthumously) at the Awards ceremony at the Australian Seniors Championships on the Gold Coast in January 2010 as the co-winner (with Kerry Ballard) of the Player of the Year for 2009.

  • Ward represented Australia in Vets/Seniors tennis at an international level 1997-2009.

  • In 2002 in Austria he was a team member in the winning team for the Bitsy Grant Cup.

  • In 2007 at Christchurch New Zealand - Ward and his partner won the 80+ Mens World Doubles

  • In 2008 Ward represented Australia in the Gardiner Molloy Cup 80+ - Ward and his partner defeated the USA.

  • October 2008, Ward was a member of the successful team who defeated the USA in the Gardnar Mulloy Cup.

  • Also that month Ward and his partner were runners up in the 80 mens doubles

  • He was winner of the 75+ Section of the Victorian Super Seniors Claycourt Championships held in Melbourne in June 2008

  • The 2008 Victorian Seniors Championships held in March 2008 Ward was the winner of the 80+ singles

  • Together with his partner they were winners of the 70/80+ age group in the 2008 Victorian Seniors Championships held in March

  • November 2009 Australian Champion 80+ in Adelaide

  • World Singles Champion 80+ in Perth 2009

  • Winner of Gardiner Mulloy Cup 2009

  • Runner Up 80+ Doubles with Doug Corbett in Perth 2009

As well as an active participant in Seniors’ tennis, Ward has contributed his time and energy to fulfil the role of Vice President of TSV, a Victoria Selector and to be a member of the organising Committee of Wodonga 2009 Australian Seniors Tennis Championships, the Victorian Championships and the Australian Clay Court Championships

 

Wards tennis resume indicates his date of birth at 1st October 1926. We believe he was a positive role model for many players in their 30, 40, 50 and 60s.
