Dual Honours for Neville Halligan

(posted Jan-2009)

One of Queensland's favourite sons, Neville ("the Brigadier") Halligan has been recognised in the latest Australia Day awards and has been awarded an OAM for his services to senior's tennis as both a player and administrator.  For those unfamiliar with Neville, he is currently the World 85+ Men's Tennis Singles Champion, having beaten his long-time rival, Bob Sherman of United States, at last year's World Championships in Turkey. He is also one of nature's gentlemen and an all-round nice guy.

Neville has now represented Australia in ITF World Cup Team events on at least 13 occasions and after a stellar year in 2008, is currently ranked No 2 in ITF World Rankings and No 1 in Australian Seniors Rankings for 85 Men. His 2008 tennis exploits included five Finals at the following events:

· USA Claycourt Championships in September
· USA 85 Grasscourt Championships in August/September
· Austrian Championships – Portschach – in June
· British Open Championships – Bournemouth – May
· ACT Open Seniors Championships – Canberra - March

Neville clearly demonstrates that "tennis really is a game for life" and has always demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the court. In recognition of his efforts in 2008, Tennis 35+ Seniors Australia recently awarded Neville the Australia Senior Player of the Year.
