About Us

Background

A seniors’ tennis club was first incorporated on 17-09-1987. It was then known as a veterans’ tennis club. Later, consistent with an Australian wide seniors’ movement, it became known as Tennis Seniors N.T. Incorporated.

At its 2010 AGM, it was decided to wind up the club. However, because of unknown administrative reasons, this decision was not enacted and so it effectively went into recess.

During 2016, a few tennis seniors in Darwin worked to re-establish the association. It was incorporated on 14-12-2016 with a membership of 5.

This reconstituted Tennis Seniors N.T. Association had its first AGM on 21-02-2018 with a membership of 60.

Objectives and Purposes

The objects and purposes of the Association are:

  • To promote and encourage the playing of tennis for Adults.
  • To encourage the playing of tennis for enjoyment, health and social interaction.
  • To encourage Territorians to participate in tennis as a sport for life.
  • To promote and encourage tennis tournaments for Adults, particularly those of ages 30 or more throughout the NT, in matches with teams across Australia and overseas.
  • To affiliate with tennis and other appropriate bodies to benefit members and operations of Tennis Seniors NT.
  • To advocate policies with members’ associations that are inclusive and beneficial to seniors.

TSNT Policy for Facilities for Senior Players

Tennis Seniors NT has a charter to represent the interests of its members who are adult tennis players over the age of 30. The aim is to encourage adults to continue playing tennis for as long as they are physically able to do so. A number of our members are into their 80s and still playing tennis. This document deals with issues such as the playing surface, shade and other factors that assist player comfort.

Territory Adult Tennis

Tennis Seniors have come to the realisation that for almost all sessions or events run we encourage adults of all ages. Our objective to encourage Territorians to participate in tennis as a sport for life involves young adults taking up the sport and continuing for as long as they can. It is an important role for our group to bring in young adult players to the sport including those who previously played as juniors but stopped playing. Equally our group will always have the important task of advocating for older tennis players to give them the best chance to continue to play tennis. Adult players under the age of 30 can currently join TSNT as non voting members.

Tennis Seniors NT and the Campaign for Sand Filled Artificial Grass Courts

Tennis Seniors are advocates for the introduction of Sand Filled Artificial Grass (SFAG) Courts in Darwin. We believe in providing tennis players in Darwin a choice and variety of surface to play on and the many benifits that SFAG provides.  It is important that our members are made aware of our efforts and the facts so they can form their own views on the level of support and viability of SFAG courts. For an update please read the summary on the efforts so far. The following documents show the facts.
